Recently I have considered breaking out my digital cameras and indulging in one of my more interesting hobbies. Video editing.
Though it got me thinking. Everything I shoot is from the perspective of the camera. What if I want something more personal but at the same timeless invasive than shoving a camera in someone's face and saying “just act natural”.
There is nothing natural about a person walking the street with a video camera held to their face. So I decided to do a little hunting for something better.
The concept of a shoulder or chest-mounted GoPro or similar type of camera was very popular but no less intimidating. So I looked a little deeper and found a solution.
Camera glasses are versatile inconspicuous and people can relax and be themselves around them. The only thing is trying to explain to friends and family why you suddenly are wearing a bulky pair of glasses everywhere.
The most frequent reaction is “oh my god, are you recording now?” Or “Oh pedo glasses”.
I can see how people could come to that conclusion but at the same time, just a little trust is expected. Camera Glasses can be used in almost any situation. From note-taking in an office meeting to skiing down a mountain and anything in between.
So I have been recording my own life from my own perspective in a personal and social experiment. Observing life as I would any other day.
Whether or not I decide to do anything with the footage I collect remains to be decided but it will be interesting to observe my own actions for a week or so.
*UPDATE* December 2021. So this was never followed through with because there were quite a few issues I encountered with privacy and such. The irony of that burns so hard in a world where people post to social media every time they take a poo. But don’t fear. Those glasses are still used in times I take a stroll on my own or with people who don’t mind them running while we go about our lives. There is another project in the works, but I won’t talk about that until I have a little more set in concrete.
